Kitchener Rangers come away with pair of weekend wins

In what could be a preview of the first round of the playoffs, the Kitchener Rangers paid a visit to the Guelph Storm on Sunday.

The visitors came away with a 5-2 victory in the final regular season matchup between the two Highway 7 rivals.

Dallas Stars prospect Riley Damiani put Kitchener in front just 6:16 into the contest. It would prove to be the lone goal of the first period.

The second period belonged to the Rangers as Jonathan Yantsis, Greg Meireles and Rickard Hugg would all score for Kitchener putting the game out of reach after 40 minutes.

In the final frame, Joseph Garreffa’s goal would be sandwiched between consolation markers from Guelph’s Fedor Gordeev and MacKenzie Entwistle.

Luke Richardson made 25 saves to record the win.

This was the final meeting of the season between Guelph and Kitchener with each team recording four wins.

FRIDAY: KITCHENER RANGERS 8, ERIE OTTERS 4

The Rangers hosted the Otters on Friday night at the Aud and doubled up Erie 8-4.

Kitchener had two goals apiece from Garreffa and Yantsis as Arber Xhekaj, Hugg, Mike Petizian and Meireles also put the puck into the back of Owen Sounds net.

Erie countered with a pair from Emmett Sproule, as well as singles from Hayden Fowler and Danial Singer.

Richardson was also between the pipes Friday as he turned away 35 shots from the visitors in helping Kitchener to the victory.

THE PLAYOFF PICTURE

Guelph appears set to finish fourth as they sit six points out of third place with three games remaining.

Kitchener has a four-point advantage on Owen Sound for fifth place with both squads still set to hit the ice three times.

The two sides will close out the season on Saturday in Owen Sound.

Playoff tickets will go on sale Tuesday morning.
