Canada Day Celebrations!

The University of Waterloo will celebrate Canada Day with traditional evening fireworks in 2019 as it explores new options to create connections between its students and the local community.

The University evaluated its recent Canada Day events and concluded that leading a large-scale entertainment event is not a sustainable role for the institution.

“We are proud to have had the opportunity to host and celebrate Canada Day in Waterloo over many years,” said Sandra Banks, vice-president of University Relations at Waterloo. “In 2019, the University’s role will transition, and we will mark Canada Day in 2019 with a traditional fireworks event.”

“We have begun discussions with student and city leaders on future community-hosted celebrations of Canada Day, and we will seek new ways to build connections between the university, our students and the local community in 2020 and beyond.”

The University’s student government began hosting Canada Day on campus in 1984 with the University assuming responsibility for organizing the event in 2013.
